Paramus is PSE&G territory, Public Service Electric and Gas, across the borough. Retail and medical buildings on PSE&G are the ones most likely to have a real case for utility efficiency incentives, because lighting and refrigeration loads are large and run long hours.
Retail fit-outs and the dates that do not move
Paramus contains Westfield Garden State Plaza, Bergen Town Center, Paramus Park and the Fashion Center, plus the Route 4 and Route 17 corridors. That concentration produces a constant stream of store fit-outs, remodels, sign and lighting work, and service upgrades as tenants change.
Retail work has one defining feature: the opening date was set by someone in a corporate office months ago and it is not moving. Our job is to be the trade that is not the reason it slips. That means ordering long lead items early, knowing the mall's contractor rules before the first day, and working the hours the landlord allows rather than the hours we would prefer.
The borough also has a growing healthcare presence, including a Valley Hospital expansion that was presented to the Planning Board in July 2026. Medical fit-outs are our strongest suit.
What Paramus requires on an electrical permit
Paramus publishes its electrical permit fees in the borough code, which is more transparency than most towns offer. As published, the fee for a service up to 200 amps is fifty dollars, 225 to 600 amps is one hundred dollars, 601 to 1000 amps is one hundred seventy five dollars, and over 1000 amps is five hundred twenty five dollars.
Two other borough rules matter. A licensed electrical contractor must sign and seal the permit application, so a building owner or a general contractor cannot file the electrical permit himself. And the borough's building chapter provides for a penalty of up to two thousand dollars per violation for work performed without a permit.
One thing to be careful about: some municipal pages around the county still list older code editions. New Jersey adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code with technical amendments one through thirteen, effective August 17, 2026, and the electrical code is set at the state level under the Uniform Construction Code rather than town by town. When a local page and the state disagree on the edition, the state governs. We bid to the state edition.
